ARUSHA NATIONAL PARK

 

Size and Location:      

53 sq miles (137 sq km)  in Northern Tanzania, XX miles northeast of Arusha and 35 miles (60km) from Kilimanjaro International Airport.

Attractions:                      

Ngurdoto Crater, Momela lakes, views of Mt Meru and Kilimanjaro, wild flowers

Animals to see:              

Colobus monkeys, buffalos, wharthog, flamingoes waterfowl, waterbucks, dik-dik, zebras and giraffes

Recommended Activities: 

Mount Meru climb, forest walks, picnics, canoeing in Momella lake.

Recommended time to go:

December ~ early March, and June ~ October

30minutes drive from Arusha

MOUNT KILIMANJARO NATIONAL PARK

 

Background:                    

Kilimanjaro means the Mountain of Light, Mountain of Greatness or Mountain of Caravans. The highest peak on the African continent and also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, with elevation of 2,950ft (900 meters) – to an imperious 19,336 feet (5,895 meters)

Size and Location:          

292 Sq miles (755 sq km).  About 80 miles (120km) from Arusha.

Attractions:              

Varying vegetation and landscape from shrubs and farmlands to forests to snow and ice at the peak and Chala crater lake

Animals to see:          

small antelopes and primates

Recommended Activities: 

Hiking, trekking, trout fishing on Chala crater lake on the southeastern slopes of mount Kilimanjaro.

Recommended time to go:

December ~ February, and July ~ October. 

How to get there:           

about 1hr to 2.5hrs from Arusha, depending on a route.

Where to Stay:             

There are several hotels in Arusha, Moshi.

Health Advisory:             

Climb slowly to increase your acclimatization time and maximize your chances of reaching the summit.
To avoid altitude sickness, allow a minimum of five nights, preferably even more for the climb. Take your time and enjoy the beauty of the mountain.

   
LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

 

Background:             .  

The alkaline lake stretches 30miles (50km) along the base of the rusty-gold (600m) high rift valley escarpment.

Size and Location:        .

About 127 miles (330 sq km) of which up to 77 sq miles (200 sq km) is the lake while full. Located in northern Tanzania 80 miles (126 km) west of Arusha reachable by chartered planes and road. 

Attractions:              .

Varying landscape from searing hot springs to grassy flood plains to peaks from Masai Steppes. Large herds of zebras, wildebeest, and buffalos in ecosystem with tree-climbing lions, waterbirds (pelicans, cormorants, storks, greater and lesser flamingoes), and over 400 bird species.

Animals to see:              .

Baboon troops, blue monkeys, tusked elephants, bushbuck, giraffes, hornbills, zebras, wildebeest, birds and buffalo.

Recommended Activities: 

Game drive, cultural tours, abseiling, forest walks, canoeing (subject to water level in the lake).

Recommended time to go:

July~ October to see the mammals and December~ June for canoeing, birds viewing and waterfalls.

How to get there:        .

About 2hrs drive from Arusha; 2hrs from Tarangire, or can also fly/drive from Serengeti or Arusha.

Where to Stay:           .

Lake Manyara Tree Lodge (the most expensive one in Manyara) is inside the park. Other include: Lake Manyara Serena, Lake Manyara Hotel and Kirurumu  Tented Camp, which are just outside the park. The ones that are a little far from the park include: Gibbs Farm and Plantation Lodge.

   
SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

 

Background:              

The name Serengeti is derived from the Maasai "Siringeti" meaning endless plains. Serengeti and Masai Mara (in Kenya) are conjoined parks are managed separately, but both countries cooperate on nature tours, search-and-rescue operations, and fire management.

Size and Location:       

Size: 14,763 sq km (5,700 sq miles).
Location: 335km (208 miles) from Arusha, stretching north to Kenya (bordering with Masai Mara, Kenya) and bordering Lake Victoria to the west.

Attractions:                     

The terrain within the park varies from vast treeless central Serengeti plains and savannah type stretches dotted with acacia trees, magnificent rock out crops called kopjes, riverine bush, thick scrub to streams, rivers, lakes and small swamps. Also, annual migration of animals.

Animals to see:               

Big Five (Lions, Leopards, Elephants, Buffalos and Rhinos), cheetah, hippos, hyenas, wildebeests, zebras, antelopes, giraffes, and over 350 species of birds.

Recommended Activities: 

Game drive, Masai Village visits, balloon safari, walking guided safari (in certain areas), and night game drive (in certain areas). 

Recommended time to go:
To follow the wildebeest migration: June thru early July in Western Serengeti, end of July through October in Northern Serengeti, and December through March in Southern Serengeti.

Central Serengeti is beautiful almost throughout the year.

Scheduled and charter flights from Arusha, Lake Manyara and Mwanza.
Drive from Arusha, Lake Manyara, Tarangire or Ngorongoro Crater.
