SOUTHERN TANZANIA NATIONAL PARKS

MIKUMI NATIONAL PARK

 

Size and Location:      

Size: 1,250sq miles (3,230 sq km)

Location: 175 miles (283 km) west of Dar es Salaam, north of Selous, and en route to Ruaha, and Udzungwa mountains.

Attractions:                      

Mikumi is part of a  much larger ecosystem centered on the uniquely vast Selous Game Reserve with plenty of hippo pools.

Animals to see:              

elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, giraffe and zebras.

Recommended Activities: 

Game drives, visit nearby Udzungwa or travel on to Selous or Ruaha.

Recommended time to go:

July ~ October, and December ~ February.

How to get there:        

A good surfaced road connects Mikumi to Dar es Salaam via Morogoro, a roughly 4 hour drive.
Also by road connections to Udzungwa, Ruaha and Selous.
Charter flight from Dar es Salaam, Arusha or Selous.

Where to Stay:

RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

 

Size and Location:          

Size: 3,980 sq miles (10,300sq km)

Location: Central Tanzania, about.

Attractions:              

Ruaha is a second largest park in Tanzania, vast wilderness area which hosts one of the largest elephant populations in Africa. Like many other central and southern parks of Tanzania, its less traveled, making it a very good choice for honeymooners and people who prefer remote areas to safari. It has acacia, savannah and miombo woodlands.

Animals to see:          

Large herds of elephants, buffaloes, lions, leopards, cheetah, impala, waterbuck, gazelle, wild dog, stripped and spotted hyenas, and over 450 birds species

Recommended Activities: 

Game drives, game viewing by boat along  the Rufiji River and walking safari.

Recommended time to go:

July ~ October. 

How to get there:           

Scheduled and/or charter flights from Dar es Salaam, Selous, Serengeti and Arusha.
Year-round road access through Iringa from Dar es Salaam (about 10 hours drive) via Mikumi or from Arusha via Dodoma.

Selous Safari Camp, Rufiji River Camp, Beho Beho Camp, Sable Mountain Lodge, Sand Rivers Lodge.

   
SELOUS GAME RESERVE

 

Size and Location:        .

Size: 19,300sq miles (50,000 sq km)

Location: 8 hrs drive south of Dar es Salaam 

Attractions:              .

Selous, which is about 4 times size of Serengeti park, possesses a diverse landscape from hot volcanic springs, sporadic lakes, channels from the Great Ruaha and Rufiji rivers. Also, over 350 species of bird and 2,000 species of plants to be seen.

Animals to see:              .

Elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, black rhino, spotted hyena, wild dogs, antelopes and over hippos, crocodiles, giraffe and zebras.

Recommended Activities: 

Game drives, game viewing by boat and walking safari.

Recommended time to go:

July ~ October.

How to get there:        .

Charter and scheduled flights from Dar, Arusha and Ruaha. Also, by road.

Where to Stay:           .
